The Scottish Highlands

  • The Highlands are region in northwest Scotland known for its mountains, lochs, and rugged natural beauty.

  • Rooted in Gaelic heritage, with strong ties to folklore and cultural tradition.

  • Architecture features stone, slate, and timber, built to suit the local climate and landscape.

  • Historic castles and estates are often repurposed into inns, hotels, and public spaces.

  • Design blends tradition with modern comfort, creating spaces that feel both authentic and timeless.

Demographics

  • The Highlands have a sparse population of roughly 234,000, creating demand for exclusive, destination-based accommodations in remote, scenic settings.

  • With over 2.5 million annual visitors, the region relies heavily on heritage tourism, drawing guests interested in castles, culture, and natural beauty.

  • Sheep farming remains a dominant rural industry, contributing to the pastoral landscape that travelers associate with the authentic Highland experience.

Sheep to Person Ratio

CONCEPT

Inspired by the quiet strength and cultural symbolism of sheep in the Scottish Highlands, this project draws from their presence as a natural, enduring part of the region’s identity. Sheep represent comfort, softness, and tradition, yet they also embody resilience in the face of rugged terrain and climate. These qualities guided the design of Ivywood Château, seen in the use of organic forms, warm textures, and a palette of mossy greens, wool whites, and earthy browns. The result is a space that feels deeply rooted in its environment, calm, welcoming, and unmistakably Highland.
